World Youth Sunday 2021
@Holy Rood Catholic Church

The HRYM and Chosen Youth held a worship service at Holy Rood Catholic Church on World Youth Sunday. The 5.30 p.m. Mass was a Youth Mass, with the readings and prayers of the faithful led by the parish's youth.

The music for the Mass was led by the New Life Choir and the Young People. Following the 5.30 mass, our amazing Witnesses Worship Band led us in worship.

National Youth Sunday is now World Youth Day and it is a unique opportunity to celebrate the role and significance of young people in the Catholic Church in England and Wales along with the global Church.

“Dear young people, make the most of these years of your youth. Don’t observe life from a balcony. Don’t confuse happiness with an armchair, or live your life behind a screen… Don’t be parked cars but dream freely and make good decisions. Take risks, even if it means making mistakes.”

“Filled with the love of Christ, young people are called to be witnesses of the Gospel wherever they find themselves, by the way they live… Being an apostle does not mean carrying a torch in hand, possessing the light, but being that light"

“Where does Jesus send us? There are no borders, no limits: he sends us everywhere... He invites us to be fearless missionaries wherever we are and in whatever company we find ourselves: in our neighbourhoods, in school or sports or social life, in volunteer service or in the workplace… He loves you, dear young people, for you are the means by which he can spread his light and hope. He is counting on your courage, your boldness and your enthusiasm.

“Young friends, don’t wait until tomorrow to contribute your energy, your audacity and your creativity to changing our world. Your youth is not an “in-between time”. You are the now of God.”

12 “With this in mind, I was traveling to Damascus with the authority and commission of the chief priests, 13 when at midday along the road, your Excellency, I saw a light from heaven, brighter than the sun, shining around me and my companions. 14 When we had all fallen to the ground, I heard a voice saying to me in the Hebrew language, ‘Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting me? It hurts you to kick against the goads.’ 15 I asked, ‘Who are you, Lord?’ The Lord answered, ‘I am Jesus whom you are persecuting. 16 But get up and stand on your feet; for I have appeared to you for this purpose, to appoint you to serve and testify to the things in which you have seen me and to those in which I will appear to you.'

- Acts 26:12-16 (NRSV CE) -

Jesus calls to be a positive change in the world which comes from the recognition that we have purpose and we are appointed.

(Acts 26:16) These words are those of Jesus to Paul, then Saul, on the road to Damascus – but they are also words of Jesus to us, wherever we are on our life’s path.

1) Stand up. Jesus calls us not to be afraid, but to stand up, wake up and open our eyes to the world around us: even though we may fall, Jesus helps us to stand and see the way forwards.

2) You are appointed. You are called and chosen to do a specific job or mission. Jesus sees our particular gifts and talents and calls us to use them. But he also chooses us because he loves us.

3) Go as a witness. The disciples were first-hand witnesses of Jesus’ work on earth and were sent out by Jesus to share the good news. As witnesses of Jesus’ light and love at work in our lives today, we are also sent out to share it!
